Blessed Am I: Family

Blessed Am I is a new post I'll be writing each week where I stop and remember just how good my life really is and take a moment to give thanks for the little blessings as well as the big ones.

This week, I'm just thankful for the blessing that is my family, both my little clan under this roof and my extended family as well.

Our family likes sayings. One of my father-in-law's infamous sayings (he passed away in 1999) was, "You can always count on your family."

That may sound trite, but for us it really is the rock bottom truth. No matter what argument (and boy, our mouthy Irish bunch can argue with the best of them) or disagreements may have happened in the past, when something bad happens to one of us all those moments of dispute are washed away. We hold each other up, literally and figuratively.

My hubs and I lived away from family (both his and mine) for the first nine years of our marriage; he had time in the US Navy to serve and then a corporate job that brought us closer but still left a distance of several hours between us and them. When we finally settled back in Ohio in 2004, we were close to his family once again; when my parents sold their house on the East Coast and moved out here to our little Ohio town in 2007, we were blessed twice-over.

I don't have a perfect family (does such a thing even exist?) and we all still have our moments of disagreement from time to time, but I'm thankful for all of them and I hope they know how much I love them.

My hope for Blessed Am I is to take a minute to celebrate what's good in my life, both the big gifts and the small moments. If you'd like to comment about something good that happened to you this week or something for which you're particularly thankful, please feel free to do so!
