Let's Go Krogering! | Week of June 6, 2011 {A Most Ho-Hum Sale Week + Extreme Couponing Fallout}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?

After looking at the weekly deal matchups, I knew I would do far better saving money at Meijer's buy 10 for $10, get the 11th item FREE sale (you can see what I bought and the coupons I used at Meijer right here) than at Kroger this week.

Still, despite the ho-hum sale week at Kroger, there were a few things I wanted to grab.  After taking my kiddos out for a quick breakfast at the donut shop (our usual Monday thing since my older son has a 7-8 am appt every Monday), I headed to Kroger at about 8:30 am with my tribe.

All was quiet at my Kroger and I found all the deals except one very notable deal: the Bic Razors, men and women's disposables (on sale for $3.99 ea) were WIPED OUT.  Every single one was GONE (probably about 6 racks worth of them) at 8:30 in the morning on the first day of the sale.

With the $3/1 coupons that are out for those, they are a hot deal for $0.99 after the coupon so I did expect they would go quickly; however, this.was.ridiculous.

It's frustrating to see first hand in my own small town the trickle down effects of the Extreme Couponing phenomenon as shown by TLC; in my almost four years as an everyday couponer (while I have a simple stockpile, I don't have a small general store in my home), I've not seen shelves wiped out so early on in a sale week like I have in the past six months since TLC began airing their show.

My concern is that the actions of a few will affect the majority and that stores that have generous coupon policies (like my beloved Kroger) will soon start changing those policies (as Kroger did in Houston area stores earlier this spring) as a hedge against those who coupon in an extreme manner and therefore deplete the stores stock and affect the stores profit margin.

IF you have (30)+ coupons for a hot sale item and you wish to use them, please remember that it is always ok to approach the store manager and ask if they will arrange a special order specifically for you.  You'll still get the deal and the store manager will likely appreciate your effort.

  1. Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth on the BIC RAZORS on sale at my local Krogers, with which is in a small town as well.
After 8 o'clock Mass on Sunday morning...we headed to Krogers for a few quick items & then upon arriving at the Store & seeing the new AD I knew I had coupons as well for the razors, well...when we got to the rack where they should have been, they were ALL GONE too. My husband & I just looked at each other & thought that EXTREME COUPONERS had hit our store as well, until we ran into one of the stockmen who polietly informed us that the BIC RAZORS never even got delivered to the Store....so I just marched straight to the Service Desk & got my raincheck, so when they do arrive I'll be set. So...maybe that might be what happened in your area....like I said just my 2 cents worth. Happy Couponing!! Love your site & THANK YOU for all the hard work you do to keep us informed.

  2. Anon: Thanks so much for your comment!

That's an excellent point and one I didn't even consider, quite frankly. That may have been the case at my store as well.

Thanks for reminding me (and everyone else) that you can always request a raincheck, too; when the product is back in stock, you'll still be able to get the sale price + coupon (assuming your coupons have not expired).

    Thanks for chiming in!

  3. FYI: I just checked my Kroger this afternoon, 6/8, and they were still completely out of these razors. I do believe this may be the same situation - that the razors were never delivered to the store.

Has anyone else experienced this at their Kroger this week?

  4. Which Kroger store do you do your shopping at? I live in Maineville and was annoyed as well at the fact that all of the BIC razors were gone midmorning on Monday. :o(

  5. April Hey! I'm just up the road in Lebanon. ;-)

I will likely check my Kroger on Sat or Sun to see if those razors are in; if not, I'll talk to my Kroger customer service desk and see if they were ever delivered and simply get a rain check.

Thanks for letting me know not to bother with heading down to your Kroger. ;-)
