My Kroger Trip, Monday, August 1, 2011:

Spent: $40.97
Saved: $33.27 (45%)

This week at Kroger, the sale ad/event featured is one that has popped up a few times before this year (and last year as well): The Cart Buster Event.

Despite the killer ad copy (props, Kroger and your PR folks!), this sale isn't loaded with spectacular deals.  In fact, there are many items featured in this sale that have been priced much less over the past 6-8 weeks during other sale events (most notably Mega Sales).

This is where having some means of tracking fluctuation in item prices is KEY in identifying if that "sale" item is really a good deal or not.  Some people swear by keeping a price book (see this post from Toni at The Happy Housewife for a fuller explanation).  You can also keep your receipts  or simply keep the weekly sales circulars as reference points on sales and prices.

I don't personally keep a price book; instead, I use this free GoogleDoc download made by my friend Andrea over at Savings Lifestyle to track my weekly grocery spending.  In the last column,  I make notes about sale prices and deals as well as changes to the price of staples like milk, eggs, and meat.  It is VERY useful.  ;-)

There are a few good deals (including freebies) at Kroger this week so it's worth the trip if you're headed out.  Just be sale savvy about those prices - don't let the ad copy and all those "Low Prices!" yellow shelf tags get the best of your budget!

My purchases at Kroger were really a mish-mash of things we needed along with the better deals I found.  I also spent about $44 at Aldi on Sunday afternoon on the usuals: milk, eggs, produce, chicken, pantry items, etc, which brings me to just about $84 for this week.

  1. I've never been a big fan of the "Cart Buster" sales at Kroger, either. In fact, I couldn't find a single item listed in the ad that was worth buying at all - I know they'll be on sale for less at some point in the coming weeks. Thanks for sharing your shopping trip and honest thoughts!
